The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has today published a survey that aims to analyze the consumption habits of Europeans regarding “counterfeit” and original content. Inisghts point to a change in attitude towards a more “legal” perspective: only 5% of Europeans say they have knowingly purchased counterfeits in the last 12 months, and only % admit to having intentionally accessed online content through sources illegal during the same period. In Spain, the percentage of buyers of counterfeits (5%) has decreased 6 percentage points since the last study in 2017. The same decrease had the tendency to access previous content from illegal sources (10%) for the same period.
Increases payment for protected content During the last year, 42% of Europeans and 54% of Spaniards have paid to access, download or play copyright-protected content from a legal service . These figures translate into Phone Number List a growth of 17 and 10 percentage points respectively with respect to the data from the last study. This rise probably has a lot to do with the rise of streaming platforms such as Netflix or HBO , the enrichment of their catalogs and the competitiveness of their prices. In fact, 89% of respondents indicate that if the price were reasonable, they would prefer to access all content legally. Do we understand the concept of IP (Intellectual Property?) out of 10 Europeans understand the concept of IP well.
The study also reflects that the greater the knowledge about the concept, the lower the propensity to buy counterfeits or download illegal content. A similar correlation exists among those who do participate in these frauds: 30% of Europeans who intentionally accessed pirated content online also purchased counterfeit products. EUIPO Executive Director Christian Archambeau comments: “Today, the number of Europeans who could say that intellectual property supports artists and creators is double what it was three years ago .” This data sends a powerful message to legislators, and shows the importance of raising public awareness about the value of intellectual property.”
